At Eversley we value the link between home and school. We aim to work in partnership with you in order to ensure that the time your child spends with us will be happy and worthwhile.

This prospectus provides information about the school, its aims and the curriculum that we offer our children. We hope that you will find it useful.

Situation

Our school is situated in a very pleasant residential area. We are lucky to have a large playing field, three playgrounds and a small nature reserve. Both key stage 1 and key stage 2 have ponds. We have long term plans to develop our grounds to provide a variety of areas and activities to suit all children's needs.

In October 1999 the Rt. Honorable Chris Smith MP opened our Pavilion 2000, an outdoor classroom funded by our Parents Association and children.

Our younger children are based in the single storey building and the older children in the two storey building. However the older children are encouraged to take an active part in helping and supporting younger children at work and at play.

Aims of Eversley Primary School

  • To provide a secure, caring, supportive and stimulating environment in which all children have equal access to the curriculum and are encouraged to strive for excellence.

  • To build confidence and self esteem in all children, encouraging them to show respect for others and tolerance of opinions and beliefs.

  • To provide a broad curriculum through which children will develop a sense of direction and purpose and an enthusiasm for learning.

  • To encourage a sense of wonder and enthusiasm in the world around us.

  • To encourage independent, active learning, giving children opportunities to work in a variety of ways and groupings and to help each child develop an enquiring mind.

  • To develop the ability to take responsibility and contribute positively to school and community life, showing respect for their environment.

  • To promote the abilities of all children, recognising that all children can have special needs at some time, and to support them in a sensitive manner.

  • To encourage the physical well-being and healthy lifestyles of all children.

  • To promote a climate of learning for adults and children, encouraging staff in their professional development.

  • To ensure that staff have a clear understanding of learning intentions which are shared with pupils in the pursuit of maintaining and raising standards.

  • To continue to develop partnership with children, staff, parents, governors and the wider community, promoting links wherever possible.

Governors

The School Governors are actively involved in ensuring that the school operates effectively and efficiently.  They are involved in determining school policy, evaluating and monitoring the curriculum and controlling the schools budget.

Full Governing Body meetings are held at least once each term with individual sub-committees meeting more frequently.  These committees include finance, staffing, premises and curriculum.

The Governors present an Annual Report to Parents.

Parents

Parents are welcomed and valued in school. We wish to work closely with them in a spirit of mutual support,  encouragement and consultation. We are aware that a child will work more successfully when home and school share the same aims.

The Head teacher and Deputy are available to discuss any issue connected with your child or the school in general.  Parents are always welcome to talk to class teachers.

We regard the help of parents in school as invaluable. If you have any time to spare and would like to come in to help in any way please let your child's teacher know. Children like to think of their parents being involved in school.

The Authority recognises that parents may not be able to meet all the costs involved in providing for their children's needs at school. Consequently if a child attends a school in the Borough and their parents are resident within the Borough, they may be entitled to some types of assistance depending on the financial circumstances of the parents e.g. for Free School Meals or School Uniform and Clothing Grants.

This, or any other confidential matter, can always be discussed with the Head teacher or persons dealing with "Assistance to Pupils" at the Civic Centre.

Eversley Primary School Association

The Association is managed by a committee of up to seventeen members elected annually at the A.G.M.  This number can include up to two members of the teaching staff.

During each school year the committee organises social and fund raising events in order to provide the school with essential items to advance the education of all pupils.  Information relating to forthcoming events can be found on the weekly newsletter.

The committee is always grateful to parents willing to offer their help at any of the functions, e.g. quiz evenings, fashion show, Christmas bazaar, summer fete, roller disco etc.

Starting School

The Staff and Governors make every effort to ensure that the first experiences which children have at Eversley Primary School are positive and welcoming. A successful and confident start to school is an important foundation for future learning and happiness.

During the Spring and Summer terms prior to starting school in September, children on the waiting list will be offered the opportunity to attend fortnightly toy library sessions. Once places are allocated pre-school visits are arranged in the Summer term in the form of a pre-school activity group. Once a week the child, with his/her parents, is invited to play in school for an afternoon and get to know the teachers and nursery nurses who will be caring for them in September.

There is a close liaison with the various play groups and nurseries which the children have been attending and in September each parent will be offered a home visit from the new class teacher and nursery nurse in order to provide further details about starting school and to get to know the child more fully. When children start school, we prefer that they attend initially for only part of the school day.  Children who are tired may become unhappy and adopt negative feelings towards school and we aim to help them gradually cope with the length of the school day and all that goes with it. Our two reception classes are each supported by a nursery nurse.

Secondary Transfer

In the September of their final term year 6 parents will receive a booklet from the London Borough of Enfield in which all relevant information concerning secondary transfer may be found.
It is always recommended to visit the school before making your final decision. Any additional information or advice can be obtained by speaking to the Head teacher or Secondary Transfer Representative.

If you bring your child to school by car please remember to park considerately and do not park on the zig zag lines. Entrance to school  is via the two gates in Oakwood Crescent. Please do not use the main entrance in Chaseville Park Road.

Whenever possible parents should arrange for routine medical and dental appointments and for music or ballet examinations etc. to take place outside school times. Please inform the school immediately of any change of home address or telephone number.

Curriculum

Children at Eversley Primary School follow a broad balanced curriculum in accordance with National Curriculum requirements. Opportunities are provided for the children to work as a whole class, in groups encouraging communication and co-operation and individually.

English - Speaking and Listening
We aim to develop listening skills and to encourage confidence and clarity in speech and communication. Pupils are given opportunities to take part in a variety of dramatic activities.

Reading
We hope that the children will gain both pleasure and knowledge from books. Using a combination of strategies, we aim to enable them to become fluent, independent readers by introducing them to a wide range of texts. We see parental involvement as essential in helping our children learn to read.

Writing
As soon as they start school the children are encouraged to put pencil to paper, and all their efforts are valued. As handwriting skills are developed, attention is paid to composition and presentation of written work in all areas of curriculum.

Maths
Children are encouraged to see mathematics as enjoyable and are helped to develop a confident, positive attitude towards the subject. There is a balance between practical and written work, with a range of mathematical resources, including calculators, in use throughout the school.

As the children develop, increasing emphasis is placed on problem solving, investigating mathematics and recording. The children are provided with opportunities to apply learned skills and concepts to new situations and helped to see mathematics as having relevance to other curriculum areas and the outside world. As children gain confidence they go on to further understanding of mathematical processes.

Science
Science and Technology involves finding out about ourselves, our world and how we affect each other.  The children will be taught the relevance of science in the world today. They are given opportunities to develop the basic skills of observation, identification of similarities and differences, measuring and recording results in a variety of ways in order to be able to carry out investigations.

The children are encouraged to raise questions, to make hypotheses, draw conclusions and give explanations concerning a variety of topics.

Whilst in the primary school, children will have opportunities to study the variety and processes of life, healthy living, earth and space, forces, light, types and uses of materials, electricity, magnetism and sound.

Information Technology (IT)
Each classroom at Eversley is equipped with a computer and printer for children's’ use and appropriate software is available for different year groups. Whilst at school, children will become familiar with using the keyboard and various functions of the computer and use it to support their work in other subjects.  They will learn how to use word-processing, desk-top publishing, produce graphics and to retrieve information from CD’s.

Humanities
In History children study ways in which the past was different from the present and the periods studied are set out in a chronological framework. They study Ancient Greece, The Romans, Life in Tudor Times, The Aztecs, Victorian Britain, local and family history. Visits out of school to places of  historical interest are an important part of the history coursework.

In Geography, children study the physical and human features of our local area as well as the world beyond that,  both within and outside the United Kingdom. Practical work around the school, in our local area and visits beyond, play an integral part in the children's work.

Religious Education
We hope to teach understanding of others’ faiths, beliefs and practices and to promote tolerance of our differences. Our children have a rich and varied background and we should use this to our advantage.  The children meet daily for a short assembly. Parents have the legal right to withdraw their children from Assemblies and/or Religious Educational lessons.

P.E. and Games
The children are introduced to a wide variety of activities, sports and games during their time at Eversley.

The School takes part in competitive sports with other schools including, swimming, athletics, football, netball and rounders.  We aim to teach the children the importance of regular exercise as an integral part of a healthy way of life. This approach is incorporated in our Personal Health and Social Education policy.

Music
All children are given the opportunity to enjoy music together. They listen to a variety of styles of music, take part in singing and composition of their own pieces of music. Children can also receive extra curricular instrumental tuition from the Borough’s peripatetic teachers (wind, string, keyboard).  Children are encouraged to perform their music so that others can appreciate their talent.

Art
We aim to provide a range of activities and experiences in art/craft and design so that children can experience colour, texture and technique with a wide range of materials. We endeavour to help them appreciate the aesthetics of the world about them and to enjoy the process from design to creation.

French
An introduction to French is taught in year 6. We hope to give the children a basic vocabulary on which to build upon in their  secondary schools.  It is a practical approach through songs, games, texts and sketches.

Sex Education
Sex education in Eversley School is seen as a developmental process which begins in the primary school and continues through to the secondary school.  It is not about propaganda or limited to factual information, but about helping children to examine their own and other peoples’ attitudes and values and to make informed decisions for themselves.

The aims of our Policy are:-
a) combat ignorance and increase understanding
b) reduce guilt and anxiety
c) promote responsible behaviour
d) promote the ability to make informed decisions
e) facilitate communication on sexual matters
f) develop education skills for future parents and child carers.

Homework
Children are often encouraged to share work which they are engaged in at school with their parents.  They normally have a weekly spelling list to learn and take home books to read on a regular basis.

Class teachers will inform parents of the expectations which they have regarding homework.

Evaluation and Assessment
Staff evaluate the work which is taking place in their classrooms and regularly monitor the children's progress.

In line with the National Curriculum, children will do the assessment tasks (SATS) at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2.

Reporting on children's progress
Each term there is an Open Evening when parents can come and talk to their child's class teacher.  During these evenings both the Head teacher and Deputy Head teacher are available to speak to parents. A written report about the child's achievements is given to the parents at the end of the academic year.

Special Educational Needs
At Eversley we have developed a whole school approach to Special Needs.  This involves identifying and assessing individual needs as early as possible and working with parents.  Children with Special Needs are supported within the curriculum framework of their class and their progress is closely monitored.  The level of help and support is matched to the needs of the child and on occasions this may extend to using the expertise of various external support agencies.

Behaviour

Through the general ethos of our school -

1)  We aim to provide a secure, calm and caring environment in which all children, irrespective  of race, religion or gender, can thrive.  All children have responsibility for their own  behaviour and have a responsibility to each other.  Everyone has the right to feel happy and secure in school.

2)  All adults, teaching and non-teaching, regard themselves as role models and have high expectations of children's behaviour.

3)  Children, parents and staff must have a clear understanding of what is unacceptable behaviour and know that it is dealt with in a consistent manner.

4)  It is essential that home/school links should be strengthened at every opportunity so that we work in a partnership with parents who will be informed of any concerns we may have about their children.  We hope that parents recognise this shared responsibility.

At Eversley we agree that everyone should;

 Be Safe
 Listen and think
Respect each other and each others property

Extra Curricular Activities

The children have the opportunity to become involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, both during and after school.

Regular educational visits are also arranged and these are a valuable part of class work.

Under the 1988 Education Act, we can only ask parents to make a voluntary contribution towards these visits. We do hope that all parents will support such visits with their contributions.

Staff Development

All primary school staff members are encouraged and entitled to continue their professional development by attending courses held by the Borough or outside agencies. They aim to keep abreast of latest developments in education which concern their particular area of responsibility or teaching and learning in general.

Governors also have the opportunity to attend courses in order to gain information or seek advice so that they are able to fulfil their duties as part of an efficient Governing Body.

Medical Attention

We have a Welfare Assistant in each building who can deal with all minor accidents and emergencies, but parents will always be contacted and informed of any serious injuries. Please ensure that we always have an up-to-date address and current emergency contact number as well as your home/work telephone number. Head teachers have been advised by the Director of Education not to administer medicine in school. We realise that there are exceptions e.g. children on regular medicines due to such complaints as asthma or eczema - please see the Head teacher about such cases.

We have been directed to apply only water for cleansing purposes to minor wounds.

Our School Nurse visits us regularly. All children have their hearing, eye-sight and teeth checked regularly. The children have a medical with the Doctor to which parents are invited.

Child Protection Procedures

Sadly, from time to time, the school may have reason to believe that a child is being abused, neglected or at risk. It is our duty, by law, to report our concerns immediately to the Education Department and Social Services who lay down clear procedures to follow. They will then investigate the matter and decide whether further actions are necessary.

Our concern is to protect all children and we have a designated member of staff with responsibility for child protection.

A copy of the child protection handbook is available for inspection at the school.
